Pastors in South Korea Were Fined for Preaching on a Plane
In South Korea, two pastors were fined after they gave a loud religious sermon during a flight. One of the men walked through the cabin shouting at passengers that they would “go to hell” if they did not believe in Jesus. This behavior caused outrage among the passengers and led to their punishment. Each was fined $724.
The pastors, both in their 60s, were flying on a domestic flight on March 12. During the flight, they began preaching loudly while standing in the aisle and arguing with passengers who protested the disruption they were causing.
“You’ll go to hell if you don’t believe in Jesus,” one of them shouted at passengers as flight attendants tried to stop him and make him sit down.
Another pastor joined him, shouting, “Hallelujah, you’ll go to hell,” and pacing back and forth down the aisle. When a crew member approached the pastors with a warning, one of them shouted back, “Don’t try to lecture me.”
The incident lasted 13 minutes. Because the pastors ignored repeated warnings from crew members and passengers, their behavior was reported to the court. The pastors themselves denied the charges.
On August 18, the Seoul Southern District Court found them guilty of violating the Aviation Security Act, and their behavior was deemed disruptive. Under South Korea’s Aviation Security Act, passengers who violate the rules may be restrained using stun guns and ropes, and an investigation may be launched against them after landing.
