South Korea to hold hearing on merging military academies
As reported by The Korea Herald, South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense will hold a public hearing on Wednesday on a plan to merge the army, navy and air force academies into a single educational institution. The hearing will begin at 2:00 p.m. and will include an expert discussion and a question-and-answer session.
Plan to create an academy
The ministry is advancing a plan to merge the academies of the three branches of the armed forces into a single institution in Jaundae, a complex of military training and educational institutions in the central city of Daejeon, about 140 kilometers south of Seoul.
The new institution is planned to be called the National Military Academy. The initiative was one of President Lee Jae Myung’s campaign promises.

Six people, including military academy graduates and professors, will take part in the debate during the hearing. The Ministry of National Defense said it would monitor the various positions expressed during the discussion and prepare an optimal plan for establishing the academy.
Resistance from the armed forces
The initiative has faced substantial opposition from the armed forces. They argue that each branch requires specialized training tailored to its operational environment.
