South Korea approves report on SME minister nominee — Korea Herald

A South Korean parliamentary committee has approved a report following hearings on the nomination of Lee So-young for minister of SMEs and Startups. This paves the way for her appointment.

Committee decision

As Korea Herald reports, the document was adopted by consensus among representatives of different political forces at a meeting of the parliamentary trade committee. Lee So-young took an oath at the beginning of the hearing at South Korea’s National Assembly on September 15.

President Lee Jae-myung nominated her during a cabinet reshuffle in late August. The nominee is seeking to head the ministry responsible for small and medium-sized businesses and startups.

Opposition concerns

The main opposition People Power Party voiced concerns over unresolved suspicions related to Lee’s purchase of an apartment, as well as what it described as the nominee’s insufficient familiarity with small and medium-sized business policy. At the same time, the party noted that Lee had participated in initiatives to abolish excessive regulatory restrictions for businesses and in parliamentary work aimed at promoting sustainable growth.

Lee So-young is a two-term lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Party. She is also known for her professional work as a lawyer in the fields of climate and environmental protection.
