Rome bids farewell to Emma Bonino ahead of state funeral
Rome is bidding farewell to Italian human rights activist, former foreign minister and European commissioner Emma Bonino, who died last week at the age of 78. As ANSA English reports, her coffin is lying in state at Rome City Hall, where a state funeral will be held on Tuesday.
Thousands pay their respects
On Sunday, the first day of the viewing, thousands of people paid their respects to Bonino. On Monday, visitors continued to come to Rome City Hall.
Bonino's coffin, who was one of the prominent figures of Italy's radical movement and founded the More Europe party, was draped in the flag of the European Union.

Political career
Bonino was one of the key participants in the Radical Party's biggest civil rights campaigns in Italy, including campaigns for the legalization of divorce and abortion in the 1970s.
From 1995 to 1999, she served as European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection. Under the government of Romano Prodi, Bonino was minister for trade and European affairs from 2006 to 2008, and in Enrico Letta's government she was Italy's foreign minister from 2013 to 2014.
