Russia plans to develop its own AI chips by 2030

The Russian company Baikal Electronics plans to release a series of specialized processors for artificial intelligence in 2029–2030.

This was announced by the company’s CEO, Andrey Evdokimov, in a comment to CNews, citing Russian media reports.

According to him, these will be Russia’s first AI chips capable of working with the Nvidia software ecosystem and the CUDA platform. Thus, the new processors should be compatible with software designed for Nvidia graphics processors.

It is expected that the development of its own AI processors will reduce dependence on Nvidia, which currently dominates the market for artificial intelligence accelerators. At the same time, independent expert and author of the Telegram channel RUSmicro, Alexey Boiko, notes that he is unaware of any other Russian chips compatible with this ecosystem.

Russia’s budget is cracking under the strain of the war with Ukraine, according to ISW.

Meanwhile, production and sales of agricultural machinery have plummeted in Russia.

After three years of unexpected economic growth, Russia is facing a sudden slowdown—war costs, inflation, and falling oil prices have begun to weigh on an economy that until recently seemed resilient to sanctions.

Consumer lending in Russia has fallen to a six-year low.
