An investigation has been launched in Romania following the explosion of a marine drone in Constanța

The Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Constanta Court of Appeal in Romania launched a criminal investigation on Friday following the explosion of a maritime drone in a local port. Law enforcement officials are investigating the circumstances of the incident and the origin of the drone.

The criminal case was opened for violations of regulations governing the circulation of weapons and ammunition, as well as for violations of regulations governing the circulation of explosive substances.

The Prosecutor’s Office of the High Court of Cassation and Justice reports that prosecutors in Constanta filed an ex officio complaint on June 5, 2026, after reports emerged of a military vessel in the Constanta port area carrying weapons and, presumably, explosives.

"Subsequently, pursuant to the ruling, the case was taken over by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Constanta Court of Appeal, and an order was issued to initiate a criminal investigation into the commission of a crime related to the violation of regulations governing the circulation of weapons and ammunition, as well as a crime related to the violation of regulations governing the circulation of explosives," the prosecutor’s office notes.

It is alleged that as a result of ongoing on-site investigations, it was determined that on Friday, around 6:30 a.m., in the area of Pier No. 78 at the Port of Constanta, a "gray military boat, of the type resembling a maritime drone, that had run aground" was reported.

"The unmarked military boat had video surveillance systems and satellite communication antennas installed in a visible location. Later, around 10:30 a.m., it exploded," the prosecutor’s office also noted.

This was reported by Digi24.
