More than 120 preschoolers in a Ghanaian school left without a teacher — MyJoyOnline

In Busuama, in the Kintampo North Municipality of Ghana’s Bono East Region, Busuama MA Basic School is facing an acute shortage of teaching staff: more than 120 kindergarten pupils have no teacher. This was reported by MyJoyOnline.

The school is the only educational institution for Busuama and neighboring communities. It currently has only six teachers, who must provide education for children from kindergarten through junior high school.

Six teachers for all classes

Three teachers are responsible for six primary school classes and are therefore forced to work on a rotational basis. Another three teach pupils in three junior high school classes and cover a total of nine subjects.

The school’s principal, Nawang Moses, said that in the previous academic year the staff numbered nine teachers. Three of them were transferred without replacements being appointed. The teacher who had worked with preschoolers on a voluntary basis also left the school.

Lack of furniture and materials

In addition to the staffing problem, the institution does not have enough teaching materials or furniture. According to the principal, the kindergarten has no chairs for children at all. He noted that teachers’ overload and the lack of basic equipment are affecting learning outcomes.

The school administration and the community called on Ghana’s Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, the Kintampo North Municipal Assembly, non-governmental and charitable organizations to urgently provide the institution with teachers, furniture and teaching materials.
