Akwa Ibom State to host national cycling marathon — Premium Times Nigeria

The La Reine Cycling Marathon will take place in Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom State from October 26 to November 1, 2026. Amateur and professional cyclists from various regions of Nigeria will take part in the competition in Uyo.

The event’s initiator, Maobong Umo, announced it at a press conference in Uyo, Premium Times Nigeria reports. According to her, the event aims to showcase the potential of Nigerian youth and discover new sporting talents.

Competition categories

The cycling marathon will include races for elite male and female professional athletes, amateurs, juniors, intermediate-category participants, veterans, and enthusiasts. Umo said that cash prizes and wellness packages from the La Reine Cycling Club would be announced in October.

According to the initiator, the race has been sanctioned by the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and the Union Cycliste Internationale. She added that the competition would be held in accordance with international cycling rules.

Safety and tourism goal

The organizers have determined the cycling race routes and provided ambulances, road marshals, officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps, and medical teams. According to Umo, these measures are intended to ensure the safety of participants and other road users.

Umo believes the competition will help showcase the state’s tourism potential, including Uyo’s scenery, as well as terrain and infrastructure suitable for cycling. Emmanuel Akpan, chairman of the Akwa Ibom chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, supported the initiative and promised media support from the association’s members.
