Sydney plans to build the only four-platform station in the Sydney Metro network
Australia’s Sydney plans to build a four-platform metro station in the Sydney Olympic Park area — the only one of this format in the Sydney Metro network. It is intended to improve transport connections and handle large flows of visitors during sporting and entertainment events.
The project for the new Olympic Park Metro Station also includes the development of a public square and the construction of two residential high-rises of 42 and 32 storeys. They are planned to accommodate around 500 apartments, ABC News Australia reports.
Station capacity
The new station will be designed for approximately 25,000 passengers per hour. It will operate alongside the existing heavy rail station, which has a capacity of 40,000 passengers per hour.
The project provides for wider pedestrian passages, additional escalators and separate passenger flows: arriving passengers will exit via one platform, while passengers waiting to board will enter through another.

New South Wales Transport Minister John Graham said that the potential of Sydney Olympic Park had been limited by insufficient transport connections. According to him, the opening of the metro is expected to reduce passengers’ rush to trains after major events end.
Construction and residential development
Business Western Sydney executive director David Borger noted that four platforms will help cope with sudden surges of people during large-scale events. Currently, passengers on the line built for the Olympics have to transfer at Lidcombe station.
Construction of the station is expected to begin around mid-2027. Completion of the Metro West project is currently scheduled for 2032. The New South Wales government has also prepared a master plan for the development of the wider Sydney Olympic Park area, providing for up to 15,000 homes by 2050. Up to 20% of such housing on government-owned land is to be affordable, compared with 5% on private sites.
