20-year-old police officer killed in Sydney crash — The Guardian

In Sydney, Australia, 20-year-old New South Wales Police constable Mia Ley was killed while on duty after the police vehicle in which she was travelling crashed into a tree. The accident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday on Gibbons Street in the Redfern area.

According to The Guardian, the marked police vehicle was travelling with its emergency lights and siren activated. Officers were responding to a report of a car theft in the Glebe area. Ley, who had served in the police force for 16 months, died instantly.

Driver's condition

A 24-year-old constable was driving the vehicle. Paramedics provided him with assistance, after which he was taken to hospital in stable condition.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said Mia Ley had shown great promise as a police officer. According to him, it is premature to discuss the vehicle's speed before the crash investigation is completed.

Crash investigation

A police perimeter was established at the crash site, and officers declared a critical incident. The New South Wales Law Enforcement Conduct Commission said it would monitor the police investigation to ensure public confidence.

The commission noted that it cannot independently investigate the incident until police complete their inquiry and any possible coronial or criminal proceedings are concluded. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Police Minister Yasmin Catley expressed condolences to the victim's loved ones. The police union also said it supported her loved ones. In the morning, Regent Street near the crash site was closed in both directions.
