In the United States, the most popular name for girls born in 1975 was Jennifer: it ranked first in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Among boys, Michael was the nationwide leader, while Jason topped the rankings in some states, according to data from the US Social Security Administration.

As The Hill reports, Jennifer was the most common name for girls not only in 1975 but also in every year from 1970 through 1984. The US Social Security Administration annually publishes the 100 most common names for boys and girls born in the country.

Michael was the most popular name for boys born in 1975 and also held the top position nationwide from 1961 through 1998. In 1975, it topped the rankings in 35 states and the District of Columbia. In the remaining 15 states, Jason ranked first among boys' names.

How the rankings have changed

According to the Social Security Administration, more than 4.3 million people named Michael have been born in the United States since 1926. It is the second most common name over this period after James; the difference between them is about 200,000 people. Jason ranks 26th among male names: more than 1.05 million newborns received it.

Since 1926, approximately 1.47 million girls have been given the name Jennifer. It ranks third among female names by prevalence — after Mary, given to 2.8 million girls, and ahead of Patricia, which has about 1.5 million bearers.

The popularity of Jennifer and Jason later declined significantly. Jennifer last entered the top 100 most commonly used names in a state in 2012, when it ranked 97th in California and Texas. Jason was last in a regional top 100 in 2021 — 72nd in Maryland and 97th in Florida. In the nationwide ranking for 2025, Jason ranked 126th among boys' names, Jennifer 586th among girls' names, while Michael was 21st among boys' names.
