In Tallinn, 50 kilometers of pipelines are large enough for people to walk through
In Tallinn, Estonia, about 3,000 kilometers of pipelines have been laid underground, of which approximately 50 kilometers are large enough for a person to walk through. This was reported by Tallinna Vesi water supply and sewerage assets development manager Marti Vaksman, according to ERR News.
Work beneath the Hipodroom intersection
Construction work is continuing throughout the summer at the Hipodroom intersection in Tallinn. According to Vaksman, work at this site is being carried out at a depth of about four meters, while in other parts of the city pipelines can lie at depths of up to 30 meters.
A separate pipeline for draining rainwater is being built beneath the intersection. The existing pipes here were laid nearly a century ago, when Tallinn had a combined sewer system: rainwater and wastewater were discharged through a single pipe.

Designed for more intense rainfall
The new stormwater collector is being planned for the next 50 years and for a possible increase in rainfall intensity. Vaksman explained that much of the work is taking place underground, so the construction site may seem barely noticeable to passersby.
In addition to the large collectors, water supply and sewer pipes, heating networks, and various cables are located beneath the sidewalks at this site. Where possible, utilities are moved under the sidewalks; there are no buildings directly above them. Vaksman said that he is not afraid of walking through pipes, although he described being in wastewater collectors as not particularly comfortable.
