Turkey is introducing a UAV traffic control system — Haber Aero
The Turkish General Directorate of Civil Aviation has developed and is beginning to implement a new nationwide system for monitoring the movement of unmanned aerial vehicles.
This new initiative by the country’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure is designed to ensure comprehensive monitoring of airspace and enhance national security.
A specialized technological system will enable real-time tracking of the movements of absolutely all civilian drones.
The official decision to launch this large-scale project was made by the country’s General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM) due to the rapid increase in the number of private drones.
Industry experts aim to minimize any risks associated with unauthorized flights over strategic facilities.
“Turkey will implement a system for tracking and managing UAV traffic to prevent security threats posed by UAVs operating in Turkish airspace,” the agency emphasized.
Thanks to a centralized control algorithm, coordinators will be able to respond promptly to violations of airspace usage rules.
The introduction of the automated platform will also simplify interaction between drone operators and government regulatory agencies.
“The system, designed to monitor and manage UAV traffic, will enable centralized real-time tracking of locations and assessment of flight safety,” SHGM representatives reported.
Currently, a detailed draft of the relevant Instruction has already been submitted for broad public discussion among experts and relevant organizations.
According to the document, all operations involving unmanned aerial vehicles are planned to be divided into three separate categories based on risk level: open, private, and certified.
The widest range of technical capabilities will be granted to aircraft in the certified category, which will undergo the most rigorous government inspection.
Aircraft in this highest category will receive official permission to conduct extended flights directly over large gatherings of people.
In addition, such aircraft may be legally used for commercial passenger transport and the transport of various hazardous materials.
For owners of drones that fall into the other two categories, significant restrictions on flight zones and maximum flight altitudes are in place.
