Opposition mayor of Ankara detained in Turkey in connection with a possible corruption case — Reuters
In Turkey, law enforcement officials detained Erdal Besikcioglu, the head of the Etimesgut district in the capital, Ankara, who is a member of the opposition. His detention took place as part of an investigation into possible corruption offenses. Details of the case are not being disclosed at this time.
According to reports, law enforcement officers conducted a search of the Etimesgut municipality building on the morning of July 30, after which the district head was detained. The investigation concerns the possible embezzlement of funds from the municipality.
The prosecutor’s office launched an investigation in March after allegedly discovering irregularities in the local government’s accounting records.
Besikcioglu’s detention marks the latest phase in a large-scale legal crackdown on municipalities led by representatives of Turkey’s main opposition party, which opposes President Recep Erdogan.
It is also noted that the day before, law enforcement officials detained the head of Istanbul’s Üsküdar district and five other individuals in connection with a case involving possible violations related to building permits and the commissioning of facilities.
