In the UK, a judge was dismissed for exchanging personal messages with staff members

In the United Kingdom, a district judge has been suspended from office due to serious disciplinary violations. The reason was complaints from staff members who pointed to overly informal communication outside of work, the sending of personal photos, and other unacceptable behavior by the judge toward court personnel.

Judge Andrew Simpson was dismissed following a disciplinary investigation that established instances of inappropriate communication with court employees.

In particular, he was accused of overly familiar and unprofessional behavior. Among the established facts were sending messages to staff on social media and messaging apps on topics unrelated to work, sharing photos from private events—one of which contained a sexualized image—as well as unwanted physical contact.

In addition, the judge used his official email for correspondence in which he made inappropriate remarks about himself and his colleagues.

During the proceedings, Simpson denied any improper intent and explained that he was trying to maintain a friendly atmosphere and encourage staff during difficult times. At the same time, he admitted to some of the charges and expressed regret for his behavior.

The disciplinary panel concluded that the judge failed to recognize the difference in rank between himself and court staff, and that his actions had a negative impact on the work environment.

Initially, the commission recommended limiting the punishment to a reprimand. However, the Minister of Justice and the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales deemed the violations so serious that they decided to dismiss the judge.

The decision states that Simpson’s conduct was repeated, constituted an abuse of his official position, caused discomfort to staff, and damaged the reputation of the judicial system.

Another aggravating factor was that the judge questioned the motives of those who supported the complaints against him.

In conclusion, the decision states that Andrew Simpson’s continued tenure as a judge is incompatible with the requirements for a representative of the judiciary, and therefore he was removed from office.

A judge from the Kyiv region will face trial for illicit enrichment, while his colleague Marmash is awaiting a hearing before the High Council of Justice.

The court ordered that MP Marchenko be forcibly brought to the High Anti-Corruption Court hearing.
