Victoria has appointed the chair of the royal commission on corruption in the construction industry

Ben Carroll, Premier of the Australian state of Victoria, has appointed Christopher Kurakis, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia, to head a royal commission that will investigate corruption in the construction sector.

Carroll also announced the commission’s terms of reference. It will examine issues of integrity in major public and private infrastructure construction projects in the state of Victoria, according to ABC News Australia.

The royal commission’s budget will be 50 million Australian dollars. Kurakis is to submit a report to the government no later than August 20, 2027.

According to ABC, the commission is being established in response to serious allegations regarding the infiltration of criminal groups into labor unions and construction sites. These allegations and internal pressure have plagued the Labor Party government. Former Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan had previously refused to establish such a commission, despite these allegations and internal pressure.
