Uganda withdraws from Invictus Games: general cites King Charles III’s approval
Uganda has withdrawn from the Invictus Games, which are due to take place next year in Birmingham, UK. Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, said the country would not take part in events that, according to him, do not have the approval of King Charles III, ABC News Australia reports.
Statement by the Chief of Defence Forces
Kainerugaba, the son of Uganda’s president, wrote on social media platform X that the country was withdrawing from the competition so that the move would not be seen as opposing the will of the British monarch. He also said that Uganda deeply respects King Charles III.
Uganda’s participation in the next Invictus Games was announced in July, when Prince Harry was in London to promote the competition. The Invictus Games were founded by Prince Harry in 2014 for wounded, injured and sick service personnel.

Prince Harry’s status
Uganda’s statement came a few days after King Charles III sent a letter to British government and military officials. In the letter, he clarified that Prince Harry and his wife Meghan would not resume royal duties.
In January 2020, Harry and Meghan announced their intention to step back from official royal duties. At the end of August, they returned to the United Kingdom with their two children, six years after moving to California.
The Invictus Games have been held seven times since their founding, including in Sydney in 2018. The previous competition took place in Vancouver, Canada.
