As of June 5, the Hungarian government has suspended the issuance of work visas for citizens of Georgia, Armenia, and the Philippines. This decision is part of a government policy aimed at tightening controls on the influx of foreign workers and stabilizing the country’s labor market.
A Hungarian government spokesperson announced that, starting Friday, the issuance of Hungarian work visas to citizens of Georgia, Armenia, and the Philippines will be suspended, marking the first step toward fulfilling the government’s promise to further regulate the influx of workers from countries outside the EU.
To this end, changes are being made to the document that allowed companies to hire people from these countries under a simplified procedure. However, those already working in Hungary will be able to apply for visa extensions.
According to official statistics, foreign workers make up approximately 2% of the workforce in Hungary. However, in certain sectors, such as manufacturing and services, their share is much higher.
The government cites concerns that the availability of foreign workers willing to work for lower wages is driving down Hungarian wages.
At the same time, some major foreign investors point out that a radical halt to the hiring of workers from abroad would harm the Hungarian economy.
