England plans to introduce a law banning cell phones in schools

England plans to introduce a law banning cell phones in schools

The Department for Education in England intends to enshrine the ban on mobile phone use in schools into law.

Sky News reports that the relevant amendments are planned to be included in the “Children’s Wellbeing and Schools” bill.

Currently, the complete ban on devices is merely a recommendation that school principals can ignore at their discretion. The new initiative will give legal force to existing rules and make them mandatory.

The Department for Education emphasized that mobile phones have no place in schools, and most schools have already implemented such restrictions in practice. The legislative changes aim to finally resolve this issue and ensure a uniform standard of safety and discipline for all students in England.

As a reminder, the Latvian Parliament previously passed amendments to the Education Act in its final reading, which prohibit students in grades 1–6 from using mobile phones in schools.

Quebec’s Minister of Education, Bernard Drainville, stated that the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices will be completely banned on the premises of all schools in the province of Quebec.
