In Australia, 12-year-old Dusty Langby walked 500 km to Canberra for children

In Australia, 12-year-old Dusty Langby completed a 16-day, 500-kilometre walking route from the town of Warren in New South Wales to Canberra. During the trek, he raised $423,000 for the Little Wings charity.

ABC News Australia reported on the completion of the route. Langby set off from Warren on August 30 with his mother Sarah, local nurse Christine Letton, Little Wings nurse Nicole Callan, and the organisation's chief executive officer Claire Pearson.

Meeting with the Prime Minister

After arriving in Canberra, a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was planned for the boy. Langby said he wanted to ask the head of government to match every dollar he raised for Little Wings.

Little Wings provides free air transport for children with serious illnesses or those who need specialised medical care. The organisation serves residents of rural and regional areas of New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Queensland.

Dusty and his brother had previously flown on Little Wings flights from Warren to Sydney for appointments with specialist doctors. The boy explained that he wanted to help more children gain access to the organisation's services.

Preparing for the route

Langby began preparing for the trek in January. According to him, he wore out four pairs of shoes during training. Along the route, the team covered between 19 and 55 kilometres each day, and at some stages Dusty's friends joined him.

Sarah Langby said that residents of communities along the route supported the participants, welcomed them and treated them to food. After completing the journey, the family plans to go camping to spend time together, rest and reflect on the boy's achievement.
