Estonia claims a drone shot down a Romanian fighter jet — ERR

A Romanian fighter jet participating in a NATO air policing mission shot down a strayed attack drone over Estonian territory.

This was stated by Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur in a comment to the ERR broadcasting company.

According to preliminary data, the unmanned aerial vehicle is Ukrainian.

The attack drone “got lost” during flight and entered the airspace of the Baltic country, where it was promptly intercepted by allied military aircraft.

The head of the Defense Ministry noted that the drone’s wreckage fell at the edge of a field in the village of Kablaküla in the Estonian municipality of Põltsamaa.

Local security services immediately cordoned off the area of the incident to conduct a detailed investigation and collect the remains of the aircraft.

Currently, Estonian government agencies and military experts continue to work at the crash site to determine the exact technical specifications of the aircraft.

“The drone crashed in a fairly marshy area, and we are still conducting a search,” he said.

The search operation is complicated by the local terrain and soil conditions.

Estonia to Allocate €17 Million to Strengthen Border with Russia and Implement AI

Earlier, Estonia ordered additional HIMARS systems from the U.S. and may receive them as early as 2027—sooner than planned. At the same time, the country is developing its own defense infrastructure in collaboration with the American company Lockheed Martin. As a result, Tallinn is building a more flexible and long-range missile arsenal.

The Estonian Ministry of Defense wants to simplify the procedures for procuring and using drones in the military. To this end, it has prepared amendments to aviation regulations designed to make the process faster and more flexible. The government explains this by noting that drones are rapidly changing modern warfare, and regulations must keep pace.
