Two strong earthquakes struck Japan
Two strong earthquakes were recorded in Japan in a single day. The tremors occurred in the central part of the country, in Nagano Prefecture. There are currently no reports of significant damage or a tsunami, but people are being warned of possible aftershocks. This was reported by Kyodo News.
In central Japan, in Nagano Prefecture, two earthquakes occurred during the day, just over an hour apart. This was reported by local media, citing data from the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The first tremor was recorded at 1:20 p.m. local time in the city of Omachi. Its intensity exceeded 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale. This means the tremors were strongly felt and could have caused minor damage.
The second earthquake occurred at 2:54 p.m. Its magnitude was slightly lower, but it was also felt in Omate and surrounding areas. Authorities warn that this may not be the end. “There is a possibility of aftershocks of similar intensity over the next week,” the agency noted.
At the same time, no tsunami warning was issued. This is important, as such tremors can sometimes trigger waves dangerous to the coastline. Due to the earthquakes, Shinkansen bullet train service was temporarily suspended on the section between Karuizawa and Itoigawa stations. Service was gradually restored later.
Currently, there are no reports of serious damage or casualties. Local authorities are continuing inspections and urging residents to be cautious and monitor official announcements.
