Iran has commented on the memorandum with Washington
Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei stated that he did not support the agreement with the United States, but approved it after the Iranian president took responsibility for the decision. This refers to a memorandum between Tehran and Washington that has already sparked political controversy within the country.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei commented on the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington, stating that he was opposed to such an agreement in principle, but ultimately gave his consent following internal political decisions by the country’s leadership.
According to him, the agreement with the U.S. did not have his support; on the contrary, it remained a matter of fundamental disagreement. In his statement, he emphasized that, in his view, the American side had acted under pressure and used all available levers of influence to achieve a result.
At the same time, Khamenei noted that the final decision was made after the Iranian president assumed political responsibility for the document and declared his readiness to guarantee its implementation.
The statement, as quoted by international media outlets, including Sky News, reads: “In principle, I had a different opinion; however, in light of the commitment that the esteemed president, as head of the Supreme National Security Council, has undertaken, I gave my approval.” It was previously reported that Iran and the United States had signed a memorandum of understanding containing 14 points and setting out the framework for further agreements between the parties.
Despite the formal signing, Khamenei’s statement demonstrates that there is no complete unity within the Iranian leadership regarding cooperation with Washington, and the document itself remains politically sensitive and may spark further debate within the country, Sky News reports.
The United States, acting on orders from President Donald Trump, has completely lifted the naval blockade of Iran’s ports and coastal areas. The U.S. military is no longer obstructing the movement of civilian and cargo ships in the Persian and Omani Gulf regions.
The day before, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the recently agreed-upon memorandum of understanding with Iran is not a final document, and the U.S. side may resume bombing if the terms of the final agreement do not satisfy it.
The U.S. and Iran will establish a $300 billion fund to rebuild the economy, according to Reuters.
The U.S. has postponed the release of the text of the agreements with Iran.
