Iran has stated that an agreement with the U.S. could not be reached due to two or three key issues

Iran has stated that an agreement with the U.S. could not be reached due to two or three key issues

Esmail Bakai, a spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that significant differences on several strategic issues prevented the conclusion of an agreement with the United States in Islamabad.

CNN reported this.

According to him, despite some progress on secondary issues, key security aspects remained unresolved.

Speaking on the state-run IRIB television channel, the diplomat explained that the parties were unable to find common ground on “two or three key issues.”

At the same time, Bakai urged people not to view the lack of an immediate result as a disaster, emphasizing the complexity of the process itself.

“We shouldn’t have expected to reach an agreement in a single round of talks. I don’t think anyone had such expectations,” the Iranian ministry spokesperson said.

He added that although no new round of meetings is currently scheduled, “diplomacy never ends.”

The main points of tension were Tehran’s nuclear program and control over strategic waterways.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance had previously made it clear that Washington is not satisfied with Iran’s lack of commitments to completely abandon the development of nuclear weapons.

According to Axios, the Iranian delegation took a hard line on its stockpiles of enriched uranium, refusing to place them under international control.

In addition to the nuclear dossier, the Iranian side continues to insist on its right to control the Strait of Hormuz.

This region is of exceptional importance for global energy security, so Tehran considers any concessions in this area unacceptable.

Peace talks between the U.S. and Iran, which lasted 21 hours in Islamabad, ended without results.

Iran announced that negotiations with the U.S. would now proceed at the expert level.
