A verdict has been handed down in Italy in the case of the Genoa bridge collapse, in which 43 people died
An Italian court sentenced Giovanni Castellucci, the former CEO of Atlantia, to 12 years in prison in connection with the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, which claimed the lives of 43 people in 2018.
At the time of the tragedy, Atlantia was the majority shareholder of the highway operator Autostrade per l'Italia, which was responsible for the bridge’s operation.
The case also involves 57 defendants, including company executives, engineers, and officials from the Italian Ministry of Transport. They are being tried on charges that include involuntary manslaughter and criminal negligence.
Relatives of the victims were present in court during the sentencing. However, the trial court’s decision may still be appealed.
Giovanni Castellucci is already serving a six-year prison sentence for another fatal incident that occurred in 2013 on a viaduct in southern Italy.
The Morandi Bridge collapse occurred during a summer storm in August 2018 and triggered widespread inspections of the country’s transportation infrastructure.
