Israel detains first suspect in attacks on Qusra village — Jerusalem Post

Israeli police have detained a 19-year-old West Bank resident on suspicion of involvement in violent attacks by Israeli settlers on the Palestinian village of Qusra. This is the first detention in the case concerning these incidents, the Jerusalem Post reports.

Joint police and Shin Bet investigation

According to Israeli police, the detention followed a joint investigation with the Shin Bet security service. Law enforcement officers collected testimony and evidence using various technological tools and capabilities.

Police said they seek to bring all participants in the attacks in Qusra to justice. At the upcoming court hearing, law enforcement officers intend to request an extension of the suspect's detention.

Closed military zone

Qusra has recently become the site of several violent attacks by extremist Israeli settlers, the outlet writes. In response, the Israel Defense Forces declared the area a closed military zone.

Despite this, 15 settlers entered the Palestinian village on August 15. They left Qusra after military personnel arrived and explained the restriction in force to them, army radio reported at the time.

On Wednesday, one of the IDF commanders was dismissed after a video emerged showing him praying together with Jewish extremists who, according to the Jerusalem Post, were involved in the attacks in Qusra. His subordinates were not punished because they believed they were carrying out a lawful order.

Settler leaders, including the heads of the Yesha and Beit El councils, condemned the violence on August 13 and stated that such attacks do not align with their approach. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also condemned the attacks, saying they harm Israel's standing in the world.
