In Russia, people will face up to three years in prison for denying the "genocide of the Soviet people"

The Russian State Duma has passed a law imposing criminal liability for “denying or condoning the genocide of the Soviet people” during World War II.

The bill was passed in both the second and third readings on March 24.

The amendments are being made to the article on “the rehabilitation of Nazism.” From now on, the following is also punishable:

  • denial of the “genocide of Soviet citizens”;
  • “approval” of such actions;
  • “insulting the memory of the victims.”

Violators face:

  • a fine of up to 3 million rubles;
  • forced labor;
  • or imprisonment for up to 3 years.

Separately, penalties for damaging or “desecrating” military graves and monuments are being increased—up to 5 years in prison or a fine of up to 5 million rubles.

The law will take effect after being signed by the Russian president.

As a reminder, Putin has stopped appearing at the Kremlin out of fear of being assassinated.

Trump also said that he trusts Putin more than Zelenskyy.
