Parliamentary elections are underway in Hungary — Reuters

Voting has begun in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, which are crucial for the country’s future.

According to Reuters, these elections could bring an end to Viktor Orbán’s 16-year tenure in power, whose policies are increasingly described as pro-Russian and anti-democratic.

Voting for candidates to the 199-seat parliament began at 6:00 a.m. local time and will continue until 7:00 p.m.

Recent opinion polls indicate a serious crisis of confidence in the current government.

Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party currently trails significantly behind the new center-right Tisa party, led by Péter Magyar. The opposition’s approval rating stands at 38–41%, which is 7–9 percentage points higher than that of the ruling party.

The election is being closely monitored in Brussels, where Orbán has repeatedly been accused of undermining democracy.

EU politicians point to the prime minister’s systematic restrictions on media freedom and minority rights, viewing him as a friend of the Russian dictator and a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump.

During the election campaign, Orbán attempted to manipulate the issue of security, presenting voters with a false choice between “war and peace.”

He claimed that a victory by the opposition could allegedly drag Hungary into Russia’s war against Ukraine, in an attempt to intimidate the electorate.

As a reminder, for the first time in many years, the opposition in Hungary has a chance to defeat Orbán.

Recall that despite Orbán’s obstruction, Ukraine will receive 90 billion: IPA President Galina Heylo on EU plans to finance the country.

Balázs Orbán, political director to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, assured that Ukraine does not pose a military threat to his country.
