SCO Digital Economy Forum opens in Urumqi — ECNS
The 2026 Digital Economy Forum of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation opened in Urumqi, China, on September 15. The event brought together government officials, business representatives and experts to discuss deepening digital cooperation among SCO countries, ECNS reports.
Areas of cooperation
Forum participants focused on digital connectivity, trade, smart industries and digital governance. The discussions aimed to expand practical cooperation among the organisation's members.
Head of China's National Data Administration Liu Liehong called for deeper cooperation in developing digital infrastructure, data governance and personnel training. He also stressed the broader use of artificial intelligence for industrial modernisation and economic development.

Projects for 2026–2027
SCO Deputy Secretary-General Sohail Khan said that digitalisation creates new opportunities for economic and trade cooperation and helps bridge the digital divide.
The forum unveiled a list of nearly 20 proposed cooperation projects for 2026–2027. Participants were also presented with a collection of 32 examples of implemented digital economy initiatives in several SCO countries. Participants agreed to promote the establishment of an SCO ministerial dialogue mechanism on digital economy issues.
