Vietnam and Myanmar agree to strengthen defense cooperation

Vietnam and Myanmar have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the defense and security sectors following talks between presidents To Lam and Min Aung Hlaing in Hanoi, Vietnam. This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing a statement by the Vietnamese government.

Defense and crime prevention

The sides plan to expand training and exchanges for young officers, as well as cooperation in search-and-rescue operations and disaster response.

The leaders also agreed to step up information exchange and coordination in combating transnational crime, illicit drug trafficking, human trafficking, high-tech crimes and online fraud.

To Lam and Min Aung Hlaing pledged not to allow individuals or organizations to use the territory of one country against the other.

Economic and regional cooperation

Vietnam’s president proposed sharing experience in economic development and international integration. Min Aung Hlaing, for his part, pledged to facilitate Vietnamese investment and called for expanding cooperation in agriculture, telecommunications, technology, energy and infrastructure.

The countries also agreed to intensify contacts through regional and international mechanisms, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and cooperation formats in the Mekong subregion.

The leaders stressed the need to ensure peace, stability, security, freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea and called for disputes to be resolved peacefully in accordance with international law.

Myanmar’s leaders have been barred from summits of leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations since 2021, when the military seized power in the country. Min Aung Hlaing led the military coup that removed Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government in February 2021, and in April he assumed the office of president and appointed a new cabinet.
