Teacher names six ways to speak German more confidently

Berlin-based German teacher and language blogger Stefanie Weinberger has named six ways to overcome the barrier between understanding German and using it more confidently in everyday communication. Her advice is intended for people who study grammar and vocabulary but lose their bearings during conversations at public institutions, at the doctor’s office or at work.

As The Local Germany reports, Weinberger advises preparing for typical conversations in advance. Before going to a bakery or visiting a doctor, it is worth thinking through exactly what needs to be said and what questions the other person may ask. This can reduce the need to formulate sentences during the conversation itself.

Phrases and readiness for misunderstandings

The teacher recommends memorizing not only individual words but also entire phrases and sentences that can be quickly recalled from memory. In her view, this approach reduces the amount of real-time translation in one’s head.

She also advises learning simple phrases in advance to ask the other person to repeat what was said, speak more slowly or explain it differently. Weinberger notes that Germans who switch to English usually want to help rather than criticize the other person’s language level. For those who want more practice, she suggests politely asking to continue in German, for example: “Können wir Deutsch sprechen?”.

Mistakes, interesting topics and practice

According to Weinberger, one of the main obstacles to fluent speaking is the fear of making mistakes. She emphasizes that avoiding conversations for the sake of perfection deprives learners of the practice needed for progress. The teacher believes that mistakes are a necessary part of language learning, and that adults often put too much pressure on themselves by trying to speak correctly right away.

She also advises choosing topics for learning that genuinely interest the person, including football, cooking, games, gardening or politics. This can make language practice closer to a real conversation rather than doing homework.

The sixth principle is to actively seek opportunities to speak. Weinberger believes that artificial intelligence tools can help rehearse dialogues, practice speaking more often and build confidence. At the same time, she says that technology does not replace teachers and live communication: the main thing for developing speaking skills is to find more opportunities to talk with friends, colleagues, teachers or with the help of technology.
