Explosion at military barracks in Bolivia kills at least 10 people

At least 10 people were killed in an explosion on the grounds of military barracks in the Bolivian municipality of Viacha, about 30 kilometers from La Paz. Dozens of people were injured, local authorities reported.

Explosion in pyrotechnics storage area

The explosion occurred at around 14:30 local time in an area where pyrotechnic materials were stored. Its cause has not yet been established. At the same time, officials said the explosion originated from a Defense Ministry fireworks warehouse.

According to CBC World, Viacha health services director Rita Nebraska told local television that the death toll could be between 10 and 15 people. She said 62 people were injured.

Evacuation of victims

Fourteen victims were taken to hospitals in La Paz. Among them is a girl with third-degree burns. Police also reported damage to dozens of houses, mainly windows blown out by the blast wave.

Ambulances, medical teams and police were sent to the military complex to assess the damage and evacuate the injured to medical facilities. According to Nebraska, firefighters warned of a heat source that remained at the site and posed a risk of another explosion. Residents were urged to stay at least 150 meters away.
