According to Donald Trump, they are tasked with determining whether an agreement can be reached to end the war between Kyiv and Moscow. The U.S. president believes there is a chance of success, although he acknowledges serious disagreements between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin.

The U.S. president explained that he sent his representatives specifically to determine whether it is possible to reach an agreement. “I sent excellent negotiators to find out if we can achieve something,” he said.
Trump also stated that he sees a “good chance” of achieving a result. At the same time, the U.S. president cited the personal conflict between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin as one of the main problems. “There’s a personality issue in the war between Russia and Ukraine. There’s President Zelenskyy and President Putin. They really hate each other,” Trump said.
According to him, there is a serious personal animosity between the Ukrainian president and the Russian dictator, which allegedly hinders the progress of negotiations. “There is serious hatred that stands in their way,” the U.S. leader said. At the same time, the main problem with the negotiations goes far beyond the personal relationship between the two presidents. Ukraine and Russia have fundamentally different positions on the terms for ending the war.
Kyiv insists on a just end to the war, security guarantees, and preventing a repeat of Russian aggression. Moscow, for its part, continues to put forward its own territorial and political demands. That is why, even with a U.S. peace proposal on the table, reaching an agreement may be difficult. Trump also mentioned the casualties of the war. According to him, Ukraine and Russia allegedly lost a combined total of 32,000 people last week.
At the same time, the U.S. president did not specify what exactly he meant by this figure or where the data came from. Therefore, it cannot be considered independently verified casualty statistics.
Trump also reiterated that he had managed to end eight wars. “I ended eight wars,” he said, adding that he hopes his efforts will be recognized. The U.S. president also mentioned the Nobel Peace Prize, which he said he did not receive. “Did I get the Nobel Prize? No,” Trump said.
He also said that the person who received the award allegedly told him that no one in the history of the prize deserved it more. At the same time, the main topic of Trump’s speech remained the negotiations regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine. Witkoff and Kushner are to represent the U.S. administration’s position during their contacts with Kyiv and Moscow. Their task is to determine whether the parties are ready to agree on at least the basic parameters of a future agreement.
It is particularly noteworthy that the U.S. side is attempting to work with both Ukraine and Russia simultaneously. This may allow Washington to compare the positions of the two sides and understand exactly where the main points of contention lie. However, the mere fact that negotiations are taking place does not mean that a peace agreement is imminent. To reach one, the parties will have to agree on significantly more complex issues, including territory, security guarantees, a cessation of hostilities, and future relations between Ukraine and Russia.
Much will now depend on the reaction U.S. representatives encounter in Kyiv and Moscow. If the parties agree to continue negotiations, this could mark a new phase in the diplomatic process. If, however, Russia or Ukraine rejects the proposed terms, Washington’s effort may once again end without any concrete results.
For now, Trump is expressing optimism and stating that there is a chance for an agreement. At the same time, the actual results of Witkoff and Kushner’s mission will only become clear after their talks with representatives of Ukraine and Russia.
