Syrian government urged to offer guarantees to win Kurdish trust
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a decree on Friday describing Kurds as “an essential and integral part” of Syria, signalling a more inclusive tone from Damascus toward the country’s Kurdish population.
Despite the statement, many Kurds say words alone are not enough. In Qamishli, the main Kurdish city in northeastern Syria, residents have called for constitutional recognition of Kurdish rights and a clearer political framework that defines their role in the country’s future.
Kurdish artists and activists in Damascus and elsewhere argue that the government must back its rhetoric with concrete guarantees. They say that legal protections, political inclusion and security assurances are necessary steps if the state hopes to rebuild confidence and move toward a more stable and unified Syria.
