Vučić announced early elections in Serbia
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that he may step down as early as the end of July. At the same time, he confirmed his intention to hold elections in the coming months and did not rule out participating in the upcoming political campaign.
According to the Serbian leader, the decision regarding his resignation will depend on the stance of the leadership of various political parties, as well as on his personal willingness to continue his political career.
“Whatever decision I make will be transparent, just as it would be if I were to announce my resignation, and it will come as no surprise to anyone,” Vučić emphasized.
The Serbian president also stated that the elections will take place within the next three to four months.
Vučić did not rule out the possibility of re-entering the political arena if he receives the support of his allies.
“If my allies ask me to run for office or to be a candidate for the position of prime minister, and if I want to do so, I will not hide it but will announce it,” he said.
The Serbian president emphasized that he has always come to power through elections and considers legitimacy to be the foundation of a democratic system.
“And I will not renounce that. But if the people decide otherwise, so be it,” Vučić stated, adding that he would congratulate any opponent in the event of his defeat.
Earlier, Vučić told parliament that he was spending his last days or weeks as president.
The political crisis in Serbia continues amid mass anti-government protests that began in December 2024 following a tragedy at the train station in Novi Sad, where 16 people died when a canopy collapsed.
It was after these events that demands for the government to take political responsibility became one of the main topics on the country’s public agenda.
This was reported by the publication Danas.
As a reminder, on June 28, thousands of people took to the streets in Kraljevo for an anti-government protest, despite Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s announcement of his intention to resign and hold early presidential and parliamentary elections. Protesters continue to demand political change in the country.
Prior to this, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced his intention to hold early parliamentary elections. According to him, the vote could take place between late September and mid-November.
