In France, there are calls to oust the government due to the heat wave

The French Green Party announced that it would initiate a vote of no confidence in the government over its response to the record-breaking heat wave. The opposition believes that the government was unprepared for the extreme temperatures that swept across the country, which could have had serious consequences for the public.

The French Green Party announced that it intends to table a motion of no confidence in the government following the heatwave that swept the country in late June. According to Politico, the opposition accuses the government of failing to prepare for the record-high temperatures and of failing to adequately protect the population.

However, the chances of this initiative succeeding are slim for now. For the government to resign, it would need the support of other opposition forces, notably the far-right “National Rally” or the Socialists. As the publication notes, the Socialists have not yet supported any of the six no-confidence motions that have already been filed against Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s government since his appointment. The cause of this new political conflict was the heatwave that swept across France.

For three consecutive days, the mainland recorded the highest average daily temperatures in recorded history. In many major cities, temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. The situation was further complicated by the fact that a significant portion of French homes, schools, and other public buildings are not equipped with air conditioning or effective cooling systems.

Public opinion polls also confirm dissatisfaction with the government’s response. According to the company Elabe, two-thirds of French people believe that the authorities responded ineffectively during this heat wave. Another 53% of those surveyed stated that France is generally unprepared for such extreme weather conditions.

Preliminary data from the National Health Agency sparked further outrage. On June 28, the agency reported that approximately 1,000 additional deaths were recorded during the heat wave compared to the previous month. At the same time, Health Minister Stéphanie Rist urged people not to jump to conclusions.

According to her, the exact number of deaths can only be determined after the analysis of all death certificates is complete. During a parliamentary session, the leader of the Greens in the National Assembly, Cyrielle Chatelain, sharply criticized the government. “These deaths are on your conscience,” she declared, addressing government officials.

Chatelain also accused the government of pursuing policies that, in her view, exacerbate social inequality and leave the most vulnerable segments of the population even less protected during such crises.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu categorically rejected these accusations. “You’re shooting yourselves in the foot by trying to artificially inflate a purely political scandal,” the head of government replied. Later, the prime minister’s office also stated that the opposition is exploiting the tragedy and the loss of life for political gain.

Despite the Greens’ high-profile statements, Politico notes that without the support of other parliamentary factions, the chances of passing a no-confidence vote remain minimal. However, the debate itself has already shown that the record-breaking heat wave has become not only a serious public health challenge for the French government but also an issue with potential political consequences, according to Politico.

Average nuclear power generation in France has fallen below 33 GW—the lowest level in the past nine months—due to the need to limit output at nuclear power plants. The reduction was caused by a critical rise in the temperature of the water in rivers used to cool the reactors.

Paris has blamed the United States in part for the record-breaking heatwave in Europe.

In Poland, the heat wave broke the temperature record set in 1921.

Forecasters have predicted when the heatwave in Ukraine will begin to subside.
