In the U.S., two fatal incidents involving ICE agents occurred within a week. According to The New York Times, both incidents took place during vehicle checkpoints.

The first incident, according to the publication, took place on July 13 in the state of Maine, where 26-year-old Colombian citizen Juan Sebastián Guerrero was killed during the operation. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that the man allegedly posed a threat to public safety.

Another incident occurred a few days earlier in Houston. According to ICE, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican citizen, resisted arrest and was subsequently fatally shot. The White House also claimed that he allegedly rammed the agents’ vehicle; however, as The New York Times notes, no public evidence of this was provided.

Following the public outcry, according to the publication, ICE leadership was reprimanded, and vehicle patrols were temporarily suspended.

Meanwhile, CNN reports that, amid demands from the White House to speed up deportations, ICE has stepped up its raids. According to the network, at least nine migrants have died during deportation operations since the start of Donald Trump’s second presidential term.
