President John Mahama announces plans to build a maize processing plant
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish a maize processing plant in the Sissala area of the country’s Upper West Region. The initiative is intended to help address the problem of recurring maize surpluses faced by local farmers, MyJoyOnline reports.
Processing for the domestic market and exports
According to Mahama, the facility will purchase maize from producers and process it for the domestic market and export. The president believes that the emergence of a stable buyer for the harvest should encourage farmers to increase production.
He announced the initiative on September 12 during a meeting with citizens at the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies. Mahama said the plant should not only buy maize but also process it for the market and export.

Funding for purchases and storage
The president also announced increased funding for the National Food Buffer Stock Company so that it can purchase more surplus maize. According to him, the company’s capacity to absorb excess produce was limited by a lack of storage facilities.
Mahama said silos are planned to be built at the company’s warehouse sites. According to him, this should expand its capacity to store produce and purchase surplus maize.
