Satellite farming in China increased rice yields — ECNS

In Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China, a digital farming demonstration project using satellite technologies reduced the use of agricultural resources by about 18%, while rice yields increased by approximately 750 kilograms per hectare. ECNS reports on the project’s results, presented at a satellite industry conference in the city of Jiamusi.

Remote farm management

The demonstration used integrated remote sensing technology combining space-based, aerial and ground-based means. It is designed for digital management of the entire rice-growing cycle, from sowing and cultivation to field care and harvesting.

According to the presented data, operational efficiency in the project increased by more than 20%. The technology was included in a list of 15 satellite developments presented at the fourth Jiamusi Satellite Industry Development Conference, which concluded on Wednesday.

Development of the satellite industry

The presented developments cover the production of satellite equipment, remote sensing applications, the large-scale use of the BeiDou system, satellite internet, as well as satellite tracking, operation and management.

Jiamusi cooperates with 28 aerospace companies, and 21 industrial projects have already been launched in the city. Going forward, the city plans to expand the use of satellite data for agricultural monitoring, environmental protection and natural disaster warnings.
