British populist Farage to run against a trash can in the election – The Guardian
Nigel Farage, the leader of Britain’s right-wing populists, will face off in the British by-election against a satirical candidate, Count Binface, who wears a trash can on his head.
A political scandal erupted after journalists exposed that Farage had received an undeclared gift of 5 million pounds from a cryptocurrency magnate and assistance from a man convicted of fraud. To avoid a parliamentary inquiry, the politician announced his resignation as the Member of Parliament for Clacton and immediately ran as a candidate in the same snap election.
In response to this maneuver, the leading British parties (Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, and the Greens) announced a boycott of the election and refused to field their own candidates. As a result, the populist’s main opponent became the independent satirical character Count Trashface. If Farage wins on August 13 and returns to Parliament, the investigation against him will be resumed, which could lead to his suspension once again.
The Guardian reports on this.
British media have revealed that, one year before the 2024 general election, Farage received financial benefits from George Cotrell, who had been convicted of fraud, including undeclared assistance with security and social media management. Farage is also already the subject of another investigation into an undeclared gift of 5 million pounds from crypto investor Christopher Harborn.
Nigel Farage, leader of the right-wing populist party Reform UK, reacted to the announcement of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation by calling for a snap general election. The politician stated that British voters are no longer willing to tolerate politicians who, in his view, fail to fulfill their campaign promises once they come to power.
