The EU may require countries to build up aviation fuel reserves — Reuters
The European Union is considering the possibility of introducing mandatory aviation fuel reserves for member states.
This was reported by Reuters.
European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen stated that such a step could be considered due to the risk of shortages amid the escalating situation in the Middle East.
According to him, the EU is also considering the possibility of redistributing fuel among countries depending on their needs.
At the same time, he emphasized that it is still too early to discuss the introduction of joint aviation fuel use.
Jørgensen noted that in the event of a crisis, the EU may resort to measures atypical for the market, focusing on supply security rather than just prices.
The European Commission also expects an increase in aviation fuel production at European refineries.
Germany is also preparing an emergency meeting of the National Security Council due to concerns about the stability of energy supplies and a possible fuel shortage. Authorities assure that the situation is under control but acknowledge the risks of deterioration.
Ines Schwertner, co-chair of Germany’s Left Party, has called on the government to ban private jets and short-haul domestic flights due to the threat of a jet fuel shortage.
