The EU will expand sanctions against Iran over the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz
The European Union is preparing to expand the criteria for its sanctions regime against Iran in order to be able to punish individuals and organizations responsible for obstructing freedom of navigation.
This was reported by Reuters, citing European diplomats.
The decision stems from the fact that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz has remained virtually closed for nearly two months. EU ambassadors have reached a political agreement to add those involved in blocking this trade route to “blacklists.” The European External Action Service is expected to prepare specific lists of new entities subject to sanctions within a few weeks.
The EU had previously designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization and imposed sanctions against Iranian officials for human rights violations. The current escalation in the region and the closure of the strait have posed a serious challenge to the global economy and energy security. Meanwhile, the U.S., led by a delegation headed by J.D. Vance, is attempting to resolve the situation diplomatically through negotiations in Pakistan. The blockade of the strait has led to a significant increase in tensions and the risk of direct military conflict. Increased pressure from Brussels is seen as a means of compelling Tehran to restore free navigation. The situation remains critical as the term of previous ceasefire agreements is coming to an end. Diplomats note that new measures should send a clear signal that the use of a naval blockade as a means of political pressure is unacceptable.
Ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has once again nearly ground to a halt after a brief resumption. Tensions in the region are rising, and ships are not risking entering the danger zone. Against this backdrop, the U.S. is stepping up pressure on Iranian vessels.
