Fico Wants to Propose to the EU a Direct Communication Channel Between Ukraine and Russia

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that he plans to propose the creation of a direct channel of communication between Ukraine and Russia during the European Council summit.

According to Fico, he also intends to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. One of the main topics will be Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

The Slovak prime minister emphasized that he supports Ukraine’s aspirations for European integration but believes that Kyiv must go through the full accession process without any exceptions or simplifications.

At the same time, Fico reiterated that Slovakia will not supply weapons to Ukraine or provide financial assistance.

He also expressed the view that the European Union is not capable of playing a decisive role in peace negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine.

Separately, the Slovak prime minister advocated returning to the idea of involving former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a possible mediator in the negotiations, citing his contacts with both sides as justification.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow is allegedly ready for negotiations to end the war against Ukraine, but does not see any willingness to engage in dialogue on the Ukrainian side.

As a reminder, during his speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin confirmed Abramovich’s visit to Kyiv and the proposal he received from Zelenskyy to meet, but stated that he sees no point in such a personal meeting, as he continues to believe that Russia’s superiority in resources will allow it to achieve its goals.
