For the first time, Ukraine has surpassed Russia in the scale of drone attacks

For the first time, Ukraine has surpassed Russia in the scale of drone attacks

In a single day, Ukraine launched a record number of drones and, for the first time, surpassed Russia in the scale of its drone attacks. According to estimates, this figure is the highest since the war began and even exceeded Russia’s largest single-day attacks. Analysts are calling this a significant shift in the balance of power in the drone war.

June 18 has already been dubbed a symbolic day in the modern drone war, as it was then that Ukraine took the lead for the first time in the scale of drone attacks, setting a new daily record and surpassing not only its own previous figures but also the largest recorded Russian strikes since the start of the full-scale war.

This is evidenced by calculations from the Russian portal “Agentstvo.Novosti,” which are based on data from the Russian Ministry of Defense regarding air defense operations. According to official reports from the Russian side, “992 Ukrainian aircraft-type drones” were shot down over the past 24 hours, along with several cruise missiles and guided bombs; however, these figures reflect only the intercepted targets, not the total number of drones launched.

Ukraine’s previous record was set on June 6, when the Russian Defense Ministry reported 911 drones shot down, and the largest Russian attack on Ukraine since the start of the war took place on March 24, when, according to their own data, 948 drones were deployed. Thus, the events of June 18 effectively brought Ukraine to a new level of drone deployment intensity.

It is also noted that the dynamics of the drone war changed significantly throughout 2026: in March, Ukraine surpassed Russia in the number of launches for the first time in a month; in April, the situation shifted back in Russia’s favor; and by May, Ukraine had regained the upper hand, significantly increasing its use of drones.

Analysts point out that this “see-saw” pattern indicates the rapid growth of drones’ role in the war and that both sides are increasingly using unmanned systems as a key tool for strikes and reconnaissance, shaping a new reality of combat operations, where production speed and the scale of deployments are becoming no less important than conventional weapons. This is reported by Russian media.

Since the start of the day, Russian troops have carried out 55 attacks on the positions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. The most tense situation is observed in the Pokrovsk, Huliaipole, and Kostiantynivka sectors.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb suggested that hostilities in Ukraine could continue for at least another three to four months.
