A Japanese chef fought off a bear using judo and continued to cook ramen despite his injuries.
A ramen chef from Northern Japan has gained popularity after surviving a bear attack by using judo to fend off the attack. The incident occurred in the morning hours at Tenya's workshop in Sannihe, Aomori Prefecture, when the 57-year-old employee, while preparing ingredients, came across a bear that suddenly attacked him and inflicted serious cuts to his face. The chef managed to perform the classic o-soto-gari technique by throwing the bear back, and despite his injuries, he immediately returned to work.

When the manager arrived a few minutes later, he saw the cook suffering from serious injuries. The man had to go to the hospital, where he was stitched up with a 10-centimeter wound near his eye and a broken rib. The chef's reaction to the situation made him a national legend, even though he had no martial arts training and worked in the medical field.
The chef received tremendous support from the public when his story was shared with many people, including the mayor of the city. He noted that, despite the common advice to play dead or crouch, there is no time for that in an emergency. The man emphasized that he was lucky because the attack was carried out by a young bear, while the mother could have jeopardized everything.
