Macron and Tusk to Discuss European Defense and Nuclear Deterrence in Gdańsk
Macron and Tusk will discuss deepening defense cooperation between France and Poland in Gdańsk, including issues of nuclear deterrence and European security. The leaders also plan to discuss strengthening the defense industry and joint defense projects. This was announced to reporters on Thursday during a briefing at the Élysée Palace.
The French president will be accompanied by the ministers of defense and foreign affairs, as well as other government officials, underscoring the scale and strategic nature of the meeting.
Officials in Paris noted that this summit is part of the implementation of the Franco-Polish Treaty on Friendship and Enhanced Cooperation, signed on May 9, 2025, in Nancy, which includes provisions on mutual defense. The Élysée Palace noted: “This summit is in line with the Franco-Polish Treaty on Friendship and Enhanced Cooperation… which includes a clause on defense and mutual assistance directly concerning France’s closest allies.”
The parties will pay special attention to the issue of nuclear deterrence, which has been actively discussed in European political circles in recent months. In particular, in March, Macron proposed involving a number of European countries, including Poland, in the concept of French nuclear deterrence, while Donald Tusk spoke of possible “conventional participation” by allies in relevant exercises and programs.
A statement from the French president’s advisors reads: “One of the summit’s goals will be to continue this discussion.” In addition, Macron and Tusk plan to discuss the development of the European defense industry and cooperation in the field of military satellite communication systems, which is viewed as part of the long-term strengthening of EU security.
