Mamdani won the votes of young people and newcomers to New York: experts explain

Zoran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, became New York City's first Muslim mayor, winning significant support from young people and new residents in his election. According to exit polls, he received 78% of the votes of voters under 30 and 66% of the votes of voters between 30 and 44. Against the backdrop of overall voter turnout, Mammadani proved himself capable of attracting new voters, as 81% of new residents who have lived in New York for less than 10 years supported him.

Experts believe that Mamdani's success among young people is linked to his activity on social media and clear political proposals, including freezing rents for regulated apartments and introducing free childcare and public transport. Such initiatives resonated with young voters who want to change the status quo in politics and seek new opportunities to improve their lives in the city. At the same time, his opponent, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, managed to attract more votes among older New Yorkers thanks to his significant reputation.

Mamdani now faces the challenge of delivering on his promises and addressing the problems facing the city. His support among young voters and new residents may prove to be sustainable if he can demonstrate effectiveness and act in the interests of the community. If he is successful, he has a chance to cement his popularity among different segments of New York's population.
