In the Kharkiv region, thousands of people are threatened with flooding due to strikes on a dam

In the Kharkiv region, thousands of people are threatened with flooding due to strikes on a dam

About 13,000 residents, including 3,500 people with limited mobility, may find themselves in a potential flooding zone as a result of Russian strikes on a dam in the Kharkiv region.

This was reported live by the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov.

“Our response plans have been ready since 2022 — the enemy was already striking this critical infrastructure facility back then. However, all these plans have been updated, and all these (evacuation – ed.) plans are absolutely realistic. Around 13,000 people may need to be relocated, including 3,500 with limited mobility. All available resources will allow us to carry everything out on time,” the official said.

According to him, information work is already being carried out in the relevant settlements.

“The main thing now — and we are working on this — is to inform the population. So that people are potentially ready for evacuation, and we will be able to provide logistics, transportation, and temporary accommodation. We have clear forecasts of how many settlements may be at risk of flooding and what measures we will take to counter this emergency (flooding caused by the destruction of the dam – ed.),” Syniehubov added.

On December 7, Russian forces carried out a missile strike on the dam of the Pechenihy reservoir in the Kharkiv region.

On December 8, following a meeting of the Coordination Headquarters, the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development and the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reported that “the situation is stable, and there is no reason to carry out any evacuation measures.” Relevant services continue regular monitoring of the water level.

The 16th Army Corps of the Ukrainian Ground Forces stated that the military has alternative routes that “were actively used earlier and now fully ensure the necessary logistics.” The temporary possible loss of the ability to move across the dam will not have a critical impact on combat operations.
