A sea mine was found in Crete; authorities said it may be of Ukrainian origin

On the Greek island of Crete, fishermen discovered a sea mine in a rocky area near the municipality of Neapoli. The dangerous object was found in the area of Saint Anthony in the north of the island.

This was reported by Ekriti and ProtoThema.

After the discovery was reported, representatives of the coast guard, rescue services, and other relevant agencies quickly arrived at the scene.

According to local media, coast guard representatives reportedly informed the citizens who found the munition that the mine may be of Ukrainian origin.

Due to the risk of explosion, special safety protocols were activated in the area where the munition was found.

Greek authorities are currently determining the origin of the sea mine, the route by which it reached the coast of Crete, and a possible connection to military activity in the Eastern Mediterranean.

They are also investigating the possibility that it is old ordnance that may have been carried ashore by the current.

Local media note that a similar incident has occurred before—last year, a sea mine was discovered on a beach on the Greek island of Rhodes.
