In the Odesa region, they continue to forcibly fill the Katlabug Reservoir from the Danube
In the south of the Odesa region, work is underway to forcibly fill the Katlabug Reservoir with water from the Danube River in order to stabilize the water balance and prevent further drops in the water level.
Three powerful pump-generator sets with a combined capacity of 10 m³/s have been deployed for the pumping operation. These measures are being implemented in accordance with a government directive regarding a comprehensive water supply program for areas affected by military operations. The reservoir is scheduled to be filled to its normal storage level of 1.7 meters.
UAH 39.5 million has been allocated for these measures.
This was reported by the State Agency of Ukraine for the Development of Land Reclamation, Fisheries, and Food Programs.
The need for water replenishment arose due to record-breaking summer heat, which caused the reservoir level to drop below the dead storage mark. This posed a threat to the region’s ecological balance, the population’s drinking water supply, the irrigation of agricultural lands, and the operation of pumping stations.
In Transcarpathia this summer, river flow in the lowland part of the region dropped to 25% of normal levels. This applies, in particular, to the Latorica, Uzh, and Tisa rivers, according to Natalia Platonova, head of the meteorological research department at the Transcarpathian Center for Hydrometeorology.
As a reminder, due to the arrival of an abnormal heat wave, Ukraine may face a significant increase in electricity consumption. According to forecasts, the load on the power grid could rise by approximately 1 gigawatt, creating the risk of a return to hourly power outage schedules.
